History
Born on December 17th, 1960, number 114254 was originally delivered to a customer in Munich. Much of the early history is lost, however by the 1970s the car was with its longtime owner in Sacramento and has been in the area ever since.
Originally specified in Slate Gray over light gray vinyl, the car now wears an older repaint in the original Slate Gray and a black interior.
Having spent most of it’s life in the dry climate of Northern California, the car is remarkably free of corrosion. Aside from one small repair to the battery tray the car is 100% original metal. Fantastic original panel gaps and consistent paint meter readings reveal no signs of prior damage or bodywork. The dashboard still retains it’s original Slate Gray paint.
It is also remarkably complete. As specified on the Kardex, the car is still in possession of the original tool kit, travel kit, and touch-up paint stick. The original spare tire strap is still present, as is the original ignition key stamped “K101”.
The engine number is non-matching, but the transmission number matches the Kardex.
RECENT HIStory
I searched for over a year to find a 356 with a structure that was as sound and unmolested as this one. The consistent panel gaps, the solid thunk when you close the doors, the original floors and lack of any evidence of prior damage made this the best choice of any 356 I had seen.
Upon my purchase the car went to longtime 356 mechanic Sam Sipkins for a thorough recommissioning and has been a fantastic driver ever since.
Work since my purchase includes but is not limited to:
New fuel system - from the gas tank to the professionally rebuilt carburetors.
Front disc brakes and master cylinder from CSP.
New muffler from Eisenmann.
Complete 6V LED lighting including headlights.
Wiper assembly from a 356C with corresponding variable-speed switch.
New shift linkage and T6B shifter assembly.
Rebuilt Blaupunkt radio with new speakers.
Original date-coded (10/60) wheels, powdercoated silver, with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires.
Floorboards stripped of old undercoating and re-coated. No corrosion was found.
Today the car is a fun and reliable driver. This year alone it has traveled from the Bay Area to San Luis Obispo for North Meets South (600+ miles) and to Santa Barbara for the West Coast Holiday (700+ miles) without incident.
The older repaint has a few bumps and bruises which makes the car a stress-free driver, just how I like it. If the next owner wishes to embark on a cosmetic restoration there are a couple small areas to be addressed, however consistent paint meter readings suggest there should be no major metalwork required nor previous repairs to correct.
